History and Growth
December 2011, the Environment Agency – Abu Dhabi (EAD) through the Abu Dhabi Global Environmental Data Initiative (AGEDI) and in partnership with the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), convened global leaders, innovators and decision-makers to the first an inaugural Eye on Earth Summit – a land-mark event which marked the birth of the Eye on Earth Movement.
October 2014, EAD and UNEP invited three global leaders from the sustainable development information sector: the Group on Earth Observations (GEO), the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) and the World Resources Institute (WRI) to join and strengthen the movements strategic leadership team and thus was born the Eye on Earth Alliance. October 2015, under the auspices of the Eye on Earth Alliance, a second Eye on Earth Summit was held in Abu Dhabi; the second Summit convened many hundreds of experts and practitioners from across the globe and from across the diversity of specialist disciplines. The 2015 Summit facilitated a rich exchange of knowledge and provided a unique cross-domain, cross-geography expert networking opportunity.
